strattera and wellbutrin

Questions that do not have exact answers. It all depends on the individual who takes Strattera and / or Wellbutrin. All we have been able to do was to search through medical forums and blogs and collect different opinions. We apologize to everybody whose observations we are using here without their author's names :) So, let us just compare these Pro & Contra of Strattera and Wellbutrin.

  1. In addition to Wellbutrin, I started Strattera two weeks ago specifically for the attention deficit disorder. Wellbutrin and Strattera as you may already know are both SNRI's (Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors). I don't know of anyone else who is taking both at the same time the way I am... in fact I didn't know that you can take both. But, I trust in my doctor and haven't found anything that say's you can't take both.

  2. I started taking Wellbutrin several weeks into the Strattera, which definitely energized me and made me feel more motivated and productive.

  3. Adderall and Wellbutrin XL can be taken together. However, since both can cause rapid hearbeat I guess your tolerance to both meds will be the true test.

  4. I take Wellbutrin (150mg) and Strattera (120mg) combo for a month now. The Strattera seems to help my impulsiveness and racing mind, the jury is out on Welbutrin which I am hoping addresses my Depression and double s to help with ADHD. There are seom mild side affects (hesitation urinating - but I drink a lot of water in the day to help this., and as of late a bit less motivated sexually, if you know what I mean, but not to the extent that I am freaking out yet.)

  5. I'm on day 5 of 150 mg of Wellbutrin XL. So far, I don't really feel too much different. No insomnia thankfully. The only side effect I seem to have right now is frequent urniation (quite the opposite of what I had with the Strattera!).

  6. Wellbutrin and Strattera can increase your libido, sometimes quite a bit from what I have heard. For me, it has decreased the sexual side effects of the Lexapro, but I wouldn't say it has really increase my libido much. Just the ability to have an orgasm.

  7. I have been on Wellbutrin 300mg for about 6 years. I have been on Strattera 80mg for about 6 weeks. I take 300mg of Wellbutrin and 80mg of Strattera daily. The Strattera picked up where the Wellbutrin left off and its effect has been beneficial. It has eliminated much of the anger I held on to and the depressions seems to be gone.

  8. Strattera seems to be helping my depression. I have read that Strattera was originally made as an anti-depressant. I cannot take SSRI's so Strattera is a better choice for me.

  1. Unfortunately, Strattera together with Wellbutrin is not yet helping. In fact, it has undone some of the postivie effects I have been getting from the Wellbutrin and Paxil combination.

  2. I am taking Wellbutrin along with Strattera. In addition, I am taking Lexapro (an SSRI) and Ritalin. The only positive effect was that I seemed to wake up less groggy in the mornings (so this is what "waking up" is supposed to feel like). Unfortunately, it also caused restricted (slower) urination and some minor "leakage" of another fluid during urination. (This was slightly "disturbing" as you can imagine). It also made me feel less mentally "sharp".

  3. I was just presribed Wellbutrin for my ADD last night. I tried Strattera for 5 weeks but had terrible side effects including extreme depression and anger.
  4. Congratulations on the Wellbutrin. It has been so incredibly helpful for me. It took probably less than two weeks for me to notice a difference. As for Strattera, it was no good at all!

  5. Just an update on my Wellbutrin XL. I am officially on 300mgs as of today. I have notice no increased ability to focus after a month long build up from 100mgs to 150mgs to 200mgs to 300 mgs. Also there seem to be no side effects. I have noticed a slightly increased libido but nothing to write home about.

  6. When I was on Strattera, the longer I was on it the angrier I got. The more depressed I got. The more easily aggitated I got. I've heard many other people go through this with Wellbutrin as well. I've noticed myself getting a bit more agitated than usual too. But not nearly as bad as on the Strattera.

  7. I've not noticed much therapeutic effect from either Wellbutrin or Strattera. Maybe the slightest improvement in focus. I'm going to talk to my doc about getting off the Strattera and trying somethng else for the ADD.

  8. I was on Wellbutrin XL and Lexapro, then my Dr threw Strattera into the mix, and i freaked. brought out all kinds of aggression that i was controlling rather well.

  9. I have a son on Strattera and he is now doing wonderful, I do believe that mixing it with Wellbutrin is a very bad choice and having been in the nursing field for 27 years I haven't seen it do very many people any good. It is a narcotic that is very addictive and has a HUGE amount of side effects.

  10. I tried taking Wellbutrin and Strattera at the same time... and eight hours later I woke up because my stomach was hurting. Bleah. Sounds like I should stick to my "Wellbutrin before eating dinner, Strattera after" plan.

We would hardly recommend you to combine Strattera with Wellbutrin, unless advised so by your physician. Wellbutrin acts as an inhibitor for the enzyme that metabolizes Strattera, so if the two drugs are taken together, the effects (and side effects!) of Strattera may be greatly increased. One more quotation. According to the Crazy Meds website, both drugs "want to grab the same precursors to activate the reuptake inhibition of norepinephrine. And as it turns out that Wellbutrin (bupropion hydrochloride) does norepinephrine reuptake in its own right, adding Strattera might be tweaking the norepinephrine just a bit too much." If by any reason you have to take both medications together, Strattera dosage should at least be decreased.

As for the question "which drug is better?", it all depends on the individual. Some patients respond better to Strattera treatment, others seem to respond better to Wellbutrin. Though belonging to the same class, the two drugs work somewhat differently. Quite a number of people really believe that Wellbutrin's effect are more definite. And besides, Strattera has a sustained effect - it takes at least two weeks to begin to take effect and a full month before it reaches a level which begins to fully treat ADD / ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). On the other hand, Strattera is generally considered to have less adverse effects, as compared to Wellbutrin, Adderall, Paxil, etc.

The final choice between Strattera and Wellbutrin is yours.
